If you want to get a real edge in the shoe business, you have to look at your energy bill. It’s as simple as that. Most shops use old-school heating methods that basically just warm up the air in the room while the leather sits there waiting to get hot. It’s a waste of money. That’s why we use Ruby Quartz lamps. They change the way heat actually hits the material.
How it actually works
Standard clear quartz lamps throw heat everywhere. It’s a scattershot approach. We do things differently by adding ruby (chromium) to the quartz. This filters the light so it hits a very specific wavelength—one that leather and organic polymers actually “like.” Instead of the heat just bouncing off the surface, it sinks deep into the fibers.**It’s a faster soak.**Because the leather heats up so quickly, your pieces spend less time in the tunnel. Fewer minutes under the lamp means fewer kWh on your monthly bill.
Getting them into your setup
These lamps are powerhouses. Depending on how much space you have in your shop, we can set them up for short-wave or medium-wave output. But a word of caution here: because Ruby Quartz creates such intense, concentrated heat, you can’t just slap them into any old socket. Your wiring needs to be rated for the peak current. If you’re swapping these into an older machine,**double-check your voltage.**If it’s not a perfect match, you’re looking at one of two things: a burnt-out filament the second you flip the switch, or annoying cold spots on your leather.
The “Catch” (And how to handle it)
Look, nothing is perfect. Ruby Quartz hits the target way faster than your average halogen tube, but that intensity comes with a price. The ruby coating puts more pressure and heat inside the tube. This means you can’t slack off on ventilation. If your cooling fans quit, the housing will overheat and you’ll fry the quartz envelope. And please, keep them clean. Dust and glue residue are the enemies here. They create “hot spots” on the glass, and once that happens, the tube can crack. Just keep the tubes wiped down and you’ll keep those energy savings rolling in.
